Associated Press Thai Cement Firm to Build Cambodia Plant 06.24.2005, 02:42 AM
A branch of Thailand's Siam Cement Group is planning to build Cambodia's largest cement factory - a US$80 million (euro67 million) project - to tap into the booming construction market here, officials said Friday.
A proposal for the project will soon be submitted to the Council for the Development of Cambodia, which "truly welcomes" the investment, said Sok Chenda, secretary-general of the state body.
The factory will be located in Kampot province, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) southwest of the capital Phnom Penh, and is expected to begin operations in 2007 with a production capacity of 800,000 tons of cement per year, he added.
Prime Minister Hun Sen and a senior Siam Cement executive discussed the plan at a meeting earlier this week, Sok Chenda said.
The project would be carried out by Siam Cement Industry, a branch of the Siam Cement Group, said Boonnam Kulrakampusiri, commercial attache at the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh.
He said the company planned to invest US$80 million to build the factory but was unable to give futher details.
The primary purpose of the factory will be to meet the growing demand for cement from construction firms in Cambodia. But it will later produce cement for export, Boonnam said.
"This country is growing very fast," he said.
